Old illustrations are a very useful way to identify some problematic species. These paintings show the white or pale spots on the underside of the mantle and the arrangement of pustules on the dorsal surface. Although Quoy & Gaimard's is somewhat, diagrammatic the Walter Elliot painting clearly shows that between the main tubercles there are secondary tubercles and no flattned non-tuberculate patches.
