Flabellinid genera Samla and Tularia
March 2, 2000
From: Juan Lucas Cervera
Dear Bill:
I would like to know if the Flabellinid genera Samla Bergh, 1900 and Tularia Burn, 1966 are considered valid still.
Thank you.
Lucas.

Cervera, J.L., 2000 (Mar 2) Flabellinid genera Samla and Tularia. [Message in] Sea Slug Forum. Australian Museum, Sydney. Available from http://www.seaslugforum.net/find/2000Dear Lucas,
The type species of Samla is Samla annuligera Bergh, 1900 which is generally considered to be a synonym of Flabellina bicolor. Samla is therefore a synonym of Flabellina Voigt, 1834.
Reference: Gosliner, T.M. & Willan, R.C. (1991) Review of the Flabellinidae (Nudibranchia: Aeolidacea) from the Tropical Indo-Pacific, with the descriptions of five new species. The Veliger, 34(2): 97-133.
Tularia was erected by Burn (1966) for an interesting aeolid from southern Australia with a radula very similar to that of Eubranchus with a broad rectangular lateral tooth rather than triangular lateral tooth. Miller (1971) re-described Tularia bractea, the type species, and argued that it was a flabellind not a eubranchid. There is no suggestion that Tularia is a synonym of Flabellina. Unfortunately I don't have a good photo of T. bractea to post on the Forum.

Best wishes,
Bill Rudman.
