Coryphella or Flabellina
April 12, 2000
From: Sylvain Le Bris
Hi
I would like to know the right name between:
• Coryphella cynara (Marcus & Marcus, 1967) and Flabellina cynara (Marcus & Marcus, 1967)
• Coryphella gracilis (Alder & Hancock, 1844) and Flabellina gracilis (Alder & Hancock, 1844)
• Corypella verrucosa (Sars M., 1829) and Flabellina verrucosa (Sars M., 1829)
Thanks

Le Bris, S., 2000 (Apr 12) Coryphella or Flabellina. [Message in] Sea Slug Forum. Australian Museum, Sydney. Available from http://www.seaslugforum.net/find/2254Dear Sylvain,
There has been some debate over whether the genera Flabellina and Coryphella have enough distinct differences to warrant keeping them as separate genera. At present most authors consider that it is best to 'lump' them into the oldest genus Flabellina. So the 'correct' name for each species is:
•Flabellina gracilis (Alder & Hancock, 1844)[Eolis]
•Flabellina verrucosa (Sars M., 1829) [Eolidia]
•Flabellina cynara (Marcus & Marcus, 1967) [Coryphella]
You will note that all the author's names are in 'brackets' or 'parentheses'. This is a convention we use in scientific names to show that the genus we now place the species in is different from that of the original author. I have put the original genus name in square brackets after each name.
Best wishes,
Bill Rudman.
