This guide to the opisthobranchs of the Mediterranean is an excellent presentation of this fabulous fauna. 126 species are illustrated and commented on with excellent in situ photos. As the author says, this is the culmination of 15 years of diving and research throughout the Mediterranean. As well as all the old favourites there are also photos of animals which I suspect are new records, such as Aplysia dactylomela, or which provide us with new information and insights into species we know little about.

Although the main emphasis is on the nudibranchs, the lesser groups such as the sacoglossans, cephalaspideans, anaspideans and pleurobranchs are all included, with accompanying introductory information.

This is a colour picture book which gives colour picture books a good name, the large format pages allowing the use of larger in situ photos. For those with a deep interest in opisthobranchs, this is an essential addition to your library. For those with a passing interest, this is a natural history book, which if left out on a coffee table, would attract the interest of even the friends we have who find nature boring.
