Differs in colour from Chromodoris strigata in having an orange-yellow edge to rhinophore pocket, in having an unbroken outer black band on the mantle and in the gills having a white basal half and and the rest orange. In gill colour it is similar to Chromodoris boucheti and one colour form of Chromodoris dianae but unlike the gills of C. strigata. It is possibly an unnamed species so I will call it Chromodoris cf. strigata (2) on the Forum to differentiate it from the animal I am already calling Chromodoris cf. strigata.

Concerning message #8339:
Dear Bill
I saw these 2 Chromodoris at the begining of the dive in the spot "La cathedrale" at flic en flac, Mauritius.
According to Philibert Bidgrain, it could be a Chromodoris cf strigata (2)
Locality: Flic en Flac, 20 m, Mauritius, Indian Océan, 07 January 2009. Length: 50 mm. Photographer: Sully Bachel.

Thanks for this record. I agree with the identification. Two characters seem to be consistent in this 'species'
-
the orange edge to the rhinophore pocket which we can see in the upper photo
-
the basal white half oin the inside of the orange gills [see middle photo]
This 'species' belongs to a group of species with very similar colour patterns. We are still gathering information to see just how consistent various colour patterns are so your photos are a valuable addition to our knowledge.

Chromodoris strigata (?) from Mauritius

Dear Bill,
I'm a little confused with the identification of this Chromodoris. In the beginning I thought it was C. strigata but 2 details are troubling me:
- the black lines besides rhinophores and gills join together
- there is an orange-yellow ring on each rhinophore's sheath

Thanks Marina,
This is an interesting find. It certainly looks quite like C. strigata but it seems to be a much bigger species. Apart from the colour differences you mention, another major difference is the gill colour - a white basal half and and the rest orange. This is similar to the gills of Chromodoris boucheti and one colour form of Chromodoris dianae but unlike the gills of C. strigata. It is possibly an unnamed species so I will call it Chromodoris cf. strigata (2) on the Forum to differentiate from the animal I am already calling Chromodoris cf. strigata.
