I can't help with the species name, but I recognize Fuensanta Candela's Janolus as one we've encountered twice here in East Timor.

Dr. Bill,

I have been going through some archives and ran into this photo and cannot find it in my field guides. It looks like the Janolus in Fuensanta Candela's message?

Locality: "Jim's Crack", 5 meters, East Timor, Banda Sea, 20 May 2005, Rock Wall. Length: ~4cm. Photographer: Nick Hobgood.

Janolus from North Sulawesi

December 19, 2006
From: Fuensanta Candela

Dear Dr Rudman,
Here is another little nudi found in Lembeh, at the Nudi retreats dive site. I have checked the forum but have not managed to find a species that could fit this subject. I'd appreciate your help very much.

Locality: Lembeh Strait, 20 m, Indonesia, Indo-Pacific, 10 September 2006, Black sand bottom. Length: 50 mm. Photographer: Fuensanta Candela.

Kind regards

Dear Fuensanta,

Superficially, this animal looks very like Mexichromis multituberculata, but it is a quite unrelated nudibranch of the family Zephyrinidae. If you look at the front of the animal you will see a wrinkled crest between the rhinophores which indicated that this is a species of Janolus. I don't recall seeing a species with this spectacular colour pattern, so unless someone recognises it I will call it Janolus sp 8.

Best wishes,
Bill Rudman
