If I had looked more closely at your original scans of the two 'species' I would have seen that both photos have what looks to be the same species of ascidian. Its a useful piece of information.

Like the red-orange spotted group of Nembrotha species, I think this and Nembrotha sp. 8 , and their relationship to Nembrotha chamberlaini will only be sorted out when we know more about their anatomy and natural history.
One clue may be the small blue ascidians that this species seems to be interested in in the photo. I wonder what it and the other species? or forms? feed on.
