This species has recently been described from the Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan. The mantle is translucent white with many large white patches, and the head tentacles [rhinophores] are tipped with orange. There is an orange band around the posterior `spout', and there can be an orange band at the anterior end of the mantle. Specimens from New Caledonia are very similar in colour, but lack the anterior orange band. It is apparently a small species, largest animal with a 5 mm long shell.

Hi Bill and everyone!
Here is a record of Volvatella angeliniana from the Sunshine Coast. It also gave off a milky substance when disturbed. This could be another record for Australia.
Locality: Old Woman Island, Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, 8 m, Queensland, Australia, Pacific Ocean, 23 December 2006, Subtidal. Length: 5 mm. Photographer: Gary Cobb.

Julie Marshall and I have both found it at Heron Island [message #14816], but it's always good to get another record of this relatively unknown species

Nice to see specimens with the full colour pattern, as described in the original description .... and I must remember to use your photo when I prepare a page on gland secretions in the sacoglossans. Another point of interest is the shape of the shell in the animal in the right of your photo. It is much more inflated than the more slender shell of the other specimen, and the shell in Ichihawa's illustration and my animal from New Caledonia. I suspect the shell changes shape as the animal's grow, such as in Volvatella vigourouxi [see message #7456], which would make shell shape in this genus an even more impossible character.
Best wishes,
Bill Rudman

Thanks for the record. I think I found this species at Heron Island in the 1970s but considered it too small to photograph at that stage. I have been meaning to look through my field notes for a drawing but haven't had time ....
